The Highlands in Ink and Watercolour- A workshop by Matty Burnham

Venue: The Art Works, Courthouse Street, Otley, Yorkshire, LS21 3AN.

Date: 10am-3pm, Wednesday 23rd July 2025.

Price: £60 per person.

In this workshop we will be painting a small coastal cottage in ink and watercolour (also often referred to as ‘line and wash’). During the workshop we will practice skills that help create a sense of light, achieve depth, and effectively simplify a composition.

The workshop is absolutely suitable for beginners, however you need to have used watercolours before and able to complete basic sketching. The approach is informal, supportive and friendly. 

You are required to bring your own materials for this workshop. Please see below for further information on these, however you a very welcome to get in touch with me at anytime if you have any specific questions about the workshop. A further email containing key information will be emailed to all participants closer to the date.

If you can no longer attend this workshop, I am happy to offer a full refund providing you inform me 14 days before the date of the workshop.

The venue is accessible by wheelchair. If you have any specific accessibility requirements, let me know and I will do my best to support you with these.

There is a car park directly opposite The Art Works on Courthouse Street. This costs £3.50 for 7 hours or £4 for 8-10 hours.

Materials required:

You will need a pencil, ruler and an eraser.

Paper: I recommend using good quality cold pressed or rough cotton paper as this

will make the techniques used easier to achieve.

I use Arches rough on a block

Watercolours:

Recommended colours-

French Ultramarine Blue

Cobalt Blue

Cadmium Red

English Red (sometimes called Light Red or Venetian Red)

Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna

Burnt Umber

Quinacridone gold

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Yellow

Please don’t worry if you don’t have everyone of these exact colours, alternative

colours will work fine.

You will need a large mixing palette.

Ink:

Waterproof ink is essential for this workshop.

Fine liners pens are probably the most convenient option (eg. Micron Sakura or Uni

Pin fine liners are both good quality and completely waterproof).

Using a dip pen with India Ink is another good option.

I will be drawing with a fountain pen With a ‘fude’ nib.

I use ‘Sketch Ink’ by Rohrer & Klingner.

Brushes:

Whichever paintbrushes you feel most comfortable with will be fine as long as they

are suitable for watercolour. Both synthetic and natural hair brushes will work fine.I use Rosemary & Co pointed round brushes.

Other materials:

You will need a receptacle or pot for water.

The following materials are useful but not essential: Masking fluid, a bar of soap,

masking tape, kitchen roll, spray bottle, white ink or white gouache.
